In the early morning hours on June 3, we lost a true original gentleman and lifelong resident of Pittsburg.

Alphonse (Al) was married for 62 years to his young love Sally. They met shortly after High school, at a small beauty salon in Moraga. They married soon after, and started their family. Together they raised 3 children. Michael, Tony (deceased) and Dina. Al was a devoted husband a loving father and proud grandfather. He earned his bachelor degree from San Francisco State University and dedicated his career to education, coaching, and mentoring young people.

Coach, as he was known to so many, loved his "job" as an educator. After, thirty-five years of teaching he retired. However, he would continue to coach. Over a lifetime he coached many sports: including baseball, golf, Football at Pittsburg and De La Salle High Schools and Women's basketball, both high school and at LMC. When he wasn't coaching he was the PHS Athletic Director. In his earlier years, he was a coach for the Pittsburg AAU Swim Team. He spent many hours fundraising (24 hour relay was his favorite). And many weekends running High School Bingo. A longtime member of the PHS Football Hall of Fame committee.

Al loved to travel. In his younger years he traveled to many states for AAU swim team competitions. Later in life he took his USA basketball team to compete in Hawaii and China. His favorite vacations were to Sicily and Mazatlan. And, he always loved taking his mother Rose to Lake Tahoe for a day of gambling.

He had a deep interest in his family heritage. And spent many hours of research and writing. He Self published a cookbook of his mom's best recipes. Al was a fisherman as well. He accompanied his Captain (dad) and spent many summers in Alaska fishing salmon. Even a carpenter, as he helped his father build the house that has cared for many generations. He is preceded by his wife Sally. And his son Anthony (Tony) Bonanno, his parents (Al and Rose) Bonanno and his sister Rosemary.

He is survived by his sister Juliet Huckaby. His son Mike (Apryl) Bonanno and daughter Dina (Anthony) Gamboa. He has 7 grandchildren Erika (Dominic), Christina (Joshua), Anthony (Kaci), Melissa (Mike) Morgan (Zack), Michael (Lindsay) and AJ Gamboa. He has 16 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Nephews, nieces and many other relatives and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.

He was a true friend and always enjoyed breakfast and talking with his buddies at the local coffee shop. Our world lost a special human being, and heaven gained a beautiful angel.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Good Shepherd Church beginning at 12:00 noon. Reception to follow at the church hall.
