Archie Mcfaul's Obituary
Archie McFaul passed away peacefully at his home September 18, 2018 surrounded by family and his care-giving angels by his side. Archie was born February 6, 1927 in Stockton California and spent his entire life as a resident of Pittsburg. Archie was a member of the pioneer McFaul family which settled in Pittsburg in 1904.
Archie graduated mid-term from Pittsburg Senior High School In January 1945. Immediately upon graduation he enlisted in the Merchant Marine and went to sea at the age of 17 as an ordinary seaman. He eventually achieved the rank of 3rd mate where he helped navigate ammunition/supply ships at the end of World War II serving on the Admiral Sims in the Pacific Theater.
Upon returning from sea in 1946, following in his father's footsteps, he became a member of the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge and was a charter member of the Pittsburg Yacht Club. Also during this time Archie bought into McFaul's Furniture and Plumbing Co taking over from his parents and later his sister Janice. After a complete remodel and restructuring of the business, the name was changed to McFaul's Gifts, specializing in fine gifts, china, crystal, house wares and bridal registry.
In 1979, McFaul's moved to a beautiful new location at 3837 Railroad Ave, just blocks from Kirker Pass. With Archie and his wife Marilyn's vision, McFaul's became the "jewel" of East Contra Costa County with their innovative displays and elegant merchandize mix. In November and December McFaul's became a holiday showplace with merchandise and displays comparable to Union Square in San Francisco. Archie was so proud when the schools would bring children by the square to see McFaul's amazing animated Christmas window displays.
Archie met his wife Marilyn Schubert in 1948. They were married on November 10, 1950. After their marriage Archie and Marilyn owned and operated the "Hilltop Motel" from 1952 - 1957 where the closure of Camp Stoneman forced them to sell. Archie and Marilyn put their time and effort into making McFaul's a successful anchor retail business in downtown Pittsburg. The store was located between 6th and 7th streets until mid 1979 before moving to their new location mentioned earlier.
In 1961, Archie took on a second career as a magnetic compass adjuster to help supplement the store and provide for his young family at the time. Compass adjusting wasn't just a job to Archie, it was his passion. Through the years, Archie became known as the finest compass man on the entire California coast adjusting compasses on all type of vessels including Coast Guard cutters, tugboats, bar pilot boats, luxury yachts, fish boats, and was most proud of working on FDR's presidential yacht Potomac and the aircraft carriers Enterprise, Carl Vinson, and Coral Sea. During his almost 55 years of compass adjusting, Archie was underway on more than 7000 vessels. Most recently Archie was given the honor of becoming a lifetime member of the San Francisco chapter of the Council of American Master Mariners (CAMM).
Archie was preceded in death by his parents Archie Sr. and Lillian McFaul, sister and brother in-law Janice and Clarence Fornwald, and in May 2011 his loving wife of 60 years, Marilyn. He is survived by his two sons Stephen (Cheryl), Kevin (Susan), grandchildren Sean McFaul and Kelsie McFaul, and his niece Gae Fornwald Mork (Randy).
Archie McFaul truly lived life to its fullest as family and friends can attest. Archie was amazingly full of knowledge about Pittsburg history and anything to do with boats, ships and navigation. Archie will truly be missed, but now he is at peace having received his eternal glory with his wife and best friend Marilyn.
Archie and Marilyn loved their family and were happiest when everyone would gather for special occasions, especially Christmas. Marilyn and Archie's home on Redondo Drive was a Christmas wonderland, where friends and family would stop by and celebrate the season. Archie liked sporting his red sweater and musical "Jingle Bell" socks. Their grandchildren, Sean and Kelsie, were their pride and joy, attending Seans little league games and football games while watching Kelsie cheer.
A celebration of Archie's life will be held on Monday, October 1, 2018 at 10:30am at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to your favorite cause or charitable organization in Archie's name.
