Richard Grimes (Louisiana) and Magnolia Turner (Arkansas) married in 1946. Three daughters were born to their union. Barbara was the middle daughter born on February 3, 1950 in San Francisco, California.  She attended Jedediah Smith Elementary School, Pelton Junior High School and graduated from Balboa High School.

It was in 1965, while she attended Balboa, that she met her future husband James B. Jones and later married him on August 13, 1967 in Reno, Nevada. To this union two daughters were born, Monique and Monica.  Barbara would call James the "love of her life", dedicating herself to their marriage of fifty-eight and one half years, until her passing on March 2, 2026.

Barbara began her employment at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) hospital in 1971 in the Computer Room. From there she transferred to the Student Housing Department, working her way up to become the Director of Student Housing. In 2005, she oversaw a multimillion-dollar project at Mission Bay in San Francisco, and in 2009 retired from UCSF after 38 years of service.

Barbara gave her heart to the Lord when she was a child. She was baptized at eight years old as a member of Double Rock Baptist Church pastored by the late Rev. Victor Medearis.  As a young woman, wife and mother, she joined the Church of the Living God-Temple #21 in San Francisco and flourished there until her husband, James, began to pastor at the Church of the Living God-Temple #16 in Oakland, CA from 1985 until 1992.  Following their service at Temple #16, they started a church in Hercules, CA. She became the founding First Lady of Church of God-Holy. In 2004, the church moved to Antioch, CA.

Being led by God and working beside her husband, Barbara headed the Women's Department, provided counseling, and sang in the choir. Those who knew her knew that she had a phenomenal singing voice. She had a passion for singing gospel songs. A few favorites that she led were 'I Love to Praise Him', 'Change', and 'Thank You'.  Barbara also participated in church outreach activities and served on various committees, including the Benevolent Committee, where she thrived with the gift of kindness and compassion to all who were in need.  She was truly a great helpmeet to her husband and pastor.

Barbara genuinely cherished the time she spent with the people she loved. Some of her happiest moments were simply being surrounded by family or chatting on the phone with friends, sharing stories, and laughing about old times. She had a gift for conversation and connection, and those moments together are memories that will be treasured forever.

In her quiet time, she enjoyed reading and writing. She loved watching her favorite shows like Gunsmoke, In the Heat of the Night, and a good Tyler Perry flick. Barbara was also well known for her fondness for shopping, shoes, and her fashionable eyewear. She found a lifelong friend in her eyewear tech.  This wasn't unusual because she was able to find "her people" everywhere she went.

Beyond her love for family and friends, Barbara had a generous heart. She took seriously the commandment to "love thy neighbor as thyself" by giving her time, talent, and even finances to others, not expecting anything in return. She volunteered at a women's shelter just as easily as she'd make time to talk with strangers who would ever so quietly cozy up to her and feel comfortable enough to share their life's tragedies or turmoil. And she fiercely supported and protected her husband, daughter, and granddaughters – not only speaking love into them but showing them that love is an action word. Her passions and compassion made a difference in many lives.

Barbara was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024. She faced her illness with remarkable strength and courage. Although her time in remission was brief, she used that time to share her testimony with anyone who would listen, speaking openly about her faith and reminding others of how good God had been to her. One of her favorite sayings was "brand new mercy!" – declaring out loud the goodness of God to forgive and allow us another chance at life each and every day.

Barbara's warmth, infectious laughter, and caring spirit will never be forgotten. Though we will miss her deeply, the love she shared and the memories she created will live on in all of us. Her strength, kindness, and unwavering faith will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

She was proceeded in death by her eldest daughter Monique Jones, mother Magnolia Grimes, and father Richard Grimes. She leaves to cherish her memory and life well-lived: her beloved husband James B. Jones, daughter Monica Jones-Ellis, stepdaughter Felicia Jones; granddaughters Mykalah Gilkey, Ashley Ellis, Mariah Ellis, Kierra Ellis; sisters Mary Ann Woodson and Arlinda Edwards; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and dear friends from church, work and community.
