Bettye Jean Hayes transitioned this life on 11/30/2021, Bettye came into this life on 03/25/1938 from the union of Alta Mae Hodges  and Bernard C Hayes Sr. in San Antonio Tx  She moved with her family to San Francisco California at the age of 5 and attended school in the Bay area beginning in San Francisco, Alameda and finally in Oakland Ca where she attended Castlemont High School. Bettye worked in several fields throughout her years, in her early adult life she ran a couple of restaurants. She had 3 children in her union with Joseph C. Varela, Junie, Marthea and Paul, with that union dissolving when her children were so young, she would often work in convalescent Hospital's as a cook as well as provide meals for neighbors during those years. Our home was often filled with neighbors playing Bid Whist, my Mother loved music and dancing. When her children were in high school she went back to school and eventually earned her Bachelor's degree in the field of Occupational Therapist she worked in the legal aide as well as Social Work fields where she provided Occupational assistance in getting individuals back into the workforce.  when her Great Granddaughter Deja was born, she devoted a great deal of her time and involvement with her schooling in the Berkeley public school system, she was widely known to attend all of Deja's school events as well as chaperoning her field trips and attending PTA Meetings. Bettye later retired well into her 70's from the Berkeley Housing and Redevelopment Authority. She enjoyed spending time with her Great Grand Daughter Deja and assisting others. She is survived by her Brother's, Bernard Hayes ( Veronica), Kenneth James ( Beverly) Daughter Marthea Varela-Johnson, and Son, Paul Varela. Her eldest Daughter Junie Meleah Varela Crosby and her baby sister Sharon James preceded her in death. She has 5 grandchildren Evelyn Delaney, Ibrihim Arsalan, Robert Johnson, Tamika Ruffin and Carl Smith and 3 great grandchildren Deja Walker Meleah and Stephon Ruffin. And a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Friends.
