Dave passed away on September 18, 2023, at La Casa Via Transitional Care Center which was his home away from home for two months. He dealt courageously with his diagnosis of glioblastoma after surgery 8/20/2022. His cancer recurred in July 2023. The family is grateful for the excellent care he received at UCSF Neuro-Oncology, John Muir Health Cancer Group, John Muir Health Radiation Oncology and John Muir Medical Center.

Dave was born September 27, 1944, in Spencer, WV to Sharlie Marie Shinn and his adoptive father, Harry Rogers Shinn. Dave graduated from Rupert High School, WV and completed some college in WV and VA. He married his first love, Ginger Canfield (now Epperson) in VA, and they had a son, Jeffrey David Shinn who predeceased him at age 53. Jeff has a daughter Samantha Evans Smith, married to Matt and they have a son and daughter, Trenton and Whitley, in Ohio. In the late 1960's Dave served in the army in Korea. He then worked successfully as a life insurance underwriter for 31 years with various companies in Washington, D.C.; Dallas, La Jolla, Los Angeles, Woodland Hills, and San Francisco.

Thanks to his love of riding motorcycles, he met his wife of 39 years, Linda Allen Parks Shinn originally from SC. Dave loved fishing and hiking especially in the Sierra's, exploring Death Valley, and going on birding field trips with his Mt. Diablo Audubon friends.

Dave's extended family includes Linda's brother, Ed Parks and wife Connie in SC, her sister Fran Mullin and former husband Larry in FL and nieces & nephews: Edward Parks and Holly, Melody, Larry and Michael Mullin and nephew David William who died at age 19 months.

Dave formed lasting and meaningful friendships wherever he found himself. His outstanding qualities of generosity, trustworthiness, compassion, and joy served him well throughout his life on this earth. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Dave was a friend of the Bahá'i Faith and Dave would want this quote by Bahá'u'lláh to touch all hearts: "O Son of the Supreme! I have made death a messenger of joy to thee. Wherefore dost though grieve? I made the light to shed on thee its splendour…."

Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at  2:00pm at Oak View Memorial Park 2500 E. 18th St., Antioch, Ca 94509. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
