Eugenio Labasan Tianio Jr "Gene", age 89 of Pittsburg, CA passed away on October 19, 2024. Born on August 10, 1935, in Tondo, Manila, Philippines, Eugenio grew up dreaming about going to the United States, which he saw as the land of opportunity.  At the age of 19, he made the decision to leave his family and law school to join the US Navy and set sail to the United States for a 21-year Naval Service career.  Gene started off as a Steward but was eventually selected to attend Dental Technician school at the Naval Training Center in San Diego where he graduated at the top of his class. He served aboard the conventional aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8), was stationed at San Francisco Naval Shipyard, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5, Naval Station Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico, and aboard his favorite ship, the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). After he retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, he served another 24 years of civil service, dedicating himself to other veterans with work at the US Public Health Service Hospital at the Presidio and at the Veterans Administration in Martinez where he retired.

Gene loved being with his family, found joy in his grandchildren, was an avid reader and fisherman, watched Jeopardy daily to challenge his mind, and was always delighted to travel to the Philippines each year to visit relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugenio and Eduvijes Tianio, his brothers, Emilio, Victorio, Jesus, Ben, Jaime, Pablo and sisters, Lucing and Nancy. He is survived by his wife, Mila, his only child, Kimberly (Randy) Cruz from Alexandria, VA, his two grandchildren, Julian and Penelope, his brother and sister, Manuel and Nenita of the Philippines and numerous beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Gene will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, generosity, and the wonderful smile and joy he brought to everyone he encountered.

Funeral liturgy will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, at 9:30am at Church of the Good Shepherd. Military burial following at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
