Jack Ong passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at the age of 96, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, lasting friendships, and a legacy of service to his family and community.
Jack was born in Arizona in 1930, where he spent his early childhood before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 11 to live with his mother. In 1948, he relocated to Pittsburg, California, to work alongside his father at the family business, 3rd Street Market. Through years of dedication and hard work, the store evolved into the well-known Jack's Market, becoming a cornerstone of the local community.
In 1973, Jack moved the business to Bay Point, where Jack's Market continued to serve generations of families until his retirement in 2000. More than a businessman, Jack was a familiar face, a trusted friend, and an active member of the community. His store was a gathering place where customers were always greeted with a smile and treated like family.
Jack believed in giving back and was deeply committed to his community through his involvement with the Lions Club. He found great joy in serving others and took pride in making a positive difference in the lives of those around him. His passion for his community was contagious.
Outside of work and community service, Jack was an enthusiastic sports fan. He was an avid supporter of the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants, with baseball holding a special place in his heart as his favorite sport.
Jack was devoted to his family. He shared 54 happy years with his beloved wife, Mary Evelyn, until her passing in 2002. Together they built a loving family and created countless cherished memories. He was also preceded in death by his treasured oldest daughter, Teri, who passed away in 2023, and is survived by his children, Jeffrey(Chris), Gregory, and Lori. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and many extended family members, dear friends, neighbors, and members of the community whose lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit.
Jack's legacy is one of hard work, service, family, and friendship. His impact on his community will be remembered for generations, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service celebrating Jack's life will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 11:00 am at Pittsburg Funeral Chapel with interment at Oak View Memorial Park Cemetery in Antioch at 1:30 pm. A reception will immediately follow at a location to be determined. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jack's memory to: Diablo Valley Center for the Visually Impaired 175 Alvarado Ave. Pittsburg, CA 94565.
