Joseph H. Siino M.D.'s Obituary
Dr. Joseph H. Siino, 81, peacefully passed away in his sleep on Friday, October 12, 2018 at his home. He had a Cardiac Arrest on June 22, 2018. Was revived and suffered for four months trying to regain his strength. After rehab, attended at home by his longtime companion, Barbara Toohey and her daughter, Pamela Hollinger as caregiver.
Joe was born in Pittsburg, CA to Horace J. and Jennie K. Siino. He attended Pittsburg schools and graduated Valedictorian of the Pittsburg High Class of 1954. Joe got his BS degree from the University of California. Moved with his wife to Omaha where two children were born. Obtained his Doctor degree from Creighton Medical School in 1965. Upon graduation from Creighton, he interned in San Jose for a year and was drafted into the Army Medical Corp as a Captain in 1966 during the Vietnam War. He did his Army Basic Training in San Antonio, Texas. Was drafted because he was the only young doctor in the area and they needed one for the Vietnam War. He served three years and was honorably discharged as a Major in 1969. After leaving the Army, Joe did his residency at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. In 1970 he was named resident of the year. Upon completion of his residency he opened his practice as an Internist in Danville, CA. When he was unable to drive his jewel, sports car, due to Macular Degeneration he retired on August 15, 2015 with much regret. He loved his work and the challenges of diagnosing illnesses. Was admired by his colleagues for his medical expertise. He will not only be missed by his family but all the nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who called Dr Joe for help and advice at home, gatherings or where ever he was.
Joe a great love for family and hearing about his grandchildren's school and sport activities, especially Lyndsey's Track records. Was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandson in January. He enjoyed watching all sports, college and professional, especially of his alma mater, The University of California, Berkeley. He liked all kinds of music. Little known fact he played the saxophone in the Pittsburg High Marching Band and played with a group after school. Was a dog lover. Enjoyed fishing with his collection of fishing poles. Was into the cousins get togethers, holidays and Reno when talk was of family and of happy times of the past.
Joe is survived by his children, Lisa Bauer and Gregory Siino, his seven grandchildren, his siblings, Hope J. Siino and Angelina L. Viscuso and his nieces and nephews.
He had a great faith and belief in the Lord and especially a devotion to the Blessed Mother. He wore her Green Scapular entwined in his hospital wrist ID when he had l2 heart by-passes in 2006. He attributed his survival to her and passed away wearing it.
Funeral liturgy will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 10:30am at Church of the Good Shepherd. Committal services following at Holy Cross Cemetery, Antioch. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to any charity of your choice in Dr. Joe's name.
