Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Lawrence "Larry" Shaw, a beloved longtime resident of Pittsburg, CA, on February 9, 2025, at the age of 78.

Larry was born on April 9, 1946, in Rockwell, Iowa, the youngest of seven children to Les and Leah Shaw. The family later relocated to Pittsburg, where Larry attended local schools and graduated with the Class of 1964. He proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a deep and lasting pride in his service.

Following his military discharge, Larry returned to Pittsburg, where he met and married Renee Merrill. Over their 54-year marriage, they built a loving home and raised two children, Kristin and Steven. Larry dedicated 30 years to PacBell/AT&T before continuing his career at Sprint for another decade, retiring after a distinguished tenure in telecommunications.

A devoted member of his community, Larry spent many years coaching for the Pittsburg Softball/Baseball Association when his children were young. He later became the head diving coach for Carondelet and De La Salle High Schools, initially while his children attended—eventually embracing the role for three decades.

Larry shared a deep bond with his son through their passion for restoring classic cars and loved hearing stories and trying new foods inspired by his daughter's international travels.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Larry was an avid fan of Raiders football and Warriors basketball. However, his greatest joy came from cheering on his granddaughter, Allison Goetz. Their shared love of sports created an unbreakable bond, and he was incredibly proud to see her achieve her dream of earning a Division I softball scholarship. Spending time with her was one of the greatest highlights of his life.

Family was at the heart of everything Larry did. From holiday celebrations to annual Hawaiian vacations with family and friends, he treasured every moment spent with his loved ones. His legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering support will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Renee; daughter, Kristin Shaw-Goetz (Tom) of Alexandria, VA; son, Steven Shaw of Buena Park, CA; and granddaughter, Allison Goetz of Alexandria, VA. He also leaves behind his sister, Leah Duncan, and brother, Les Shaw, both of Boulder Creek, CA, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Les and Leah Shaw; brother, Norman Shaw; and sisters, Donna Pope, Janet Jordan, and Karen Krummel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 9th, 2025, from 12:00–4:00pm at the Pittsburg Elks Lodge, 200 Marina Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
