Obituary

Leslie "DJ LP" Perez, 49, beloved father, son, brother and uncle passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021. Leslie was born in Washington on March 14, 1972. He moved as a child to Pittsburg, CA where he grew up. Lesllie was a DJ for 35+ years.
Leslie was a fun and loving father, a provider for his family, amazing godfather, wonderful, generous friend, talented, dedicated and driven DJ who mastered his craft which was inspiring to others. He was always there for those that needed him. Leslie was known for being kind, funny and always cracking jokes, his humble spirit, love for music and food, always down for his friends no matter what they needed. Leslie never wanted to be the life of the party, instead he wanted to make sure that he rocked the party.
Leslie is survived by his two children Jasmine Perez and Anthony Perez, the mother of his children Leticia Munoz, mother Maria S. Leyva, sister Monica Perez, nephew Joshua Webb and niece Zariah Webb.
LP would say, "Mixing was always a thing for me. I would wake up early in the morning to practice and when I would get home from school, I would keep mixing. There were times my mom would take my needles to work so that I would take a break from mixing, what she didn't know was that I had a backup pair."
DJ LP has been mixing since the 7th grade, he would play at dances, house parties, quinceaneras and weddings.
In the '90s he started to reach out to Jazzy Jim who was the mix show coordinator at the time. He would give Jazzy Jim mixtapes until one day he called Leslie and said he was putting him on at 7:30PM to be a guest DJ.
During this period of DJing there were so many styles of music out there . Jazzy Jim let Leslie know that if he really wanted to be the best, he had to play it all from reggae, to hip hop, to salsa, to freestyle to latin house. Leslie took that advice and made sure to master all types of music of genres and styles of mixing.
Challenges are what make DJs like DJ LP stand out and get recognized. Leslie defeated every challenge and made a name for himself throughout the Bay Area.
Leslies passion for music will never end. From starting out doing house parties in Pittsburg, to answering phones to DJing at different times at the radio station, to becoming Assistant Music Director and before he passed, he held the position of Mix Show Coordinator at 99.7 NOW. Leslies goal was to grow and learn the trade. DJ LP believed that it was always good to get out to the streets and see what they are talking about, see that music they are feeling, check in with the kids and see what's buzzing around. You have to go to the people to sometimes get that true feedback.
When Leslie wasn't DJing he would be at home watching movies, he was a fan of The GodFather, Beat Street, Pineapple Express, Carwash, Halloween and Krush Groove to name a few, hanging out with friends, shopping for the newest cologne, playing Bingo, searching for new music and playing Poker with the boys on Sunday nights. Leslie loved Christmas. Christmas was always his time to shine, he made sure his house was the brightest and most decorated on the block, he was our very own Clarke Griswold. Christmas was about spending time with family, watching A Christmas Story, decorating the tree, putting lights up on the house and seeing the smiles of those he loved when they would open his gift that was thoughtfully chosen.
Leslies legacy will always live on and he will forever be missed.
