Obituary

Louise Julia Hartley Rather (Julie) 74, passed away in her sleep on January 14, 2022.

Julie was born in Oakland CA and grew up in Tulelake, CA graduating from Tulelake High School in 1965.  Julie was active in 4H, showing sheep at the county fair and in Future Homemakers of America, FHA, where she won Homemaker of the Year in high school.  She went on to attend Shasta Jr College in Redding before joining the Army in January of 1967. Julie served in Vietnam at Long Bien in 1969 – 1970 earning the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal w/ Palm Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Civil Action 1C Palm Unit Citation, and the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals.  After returning to the States, Julie joined the California National Guard in 1973 and served with honor for another 23 years.  She was the recipient of the California National Guard Commanding General's Meritorious Unit Citation as well as a California Commendation Medal.

Julie had a loving heart and was very fond of both her family and her cats.   She is survived by her husband, Glenn Johnson, her son Jonathan Rather, her brother Daniel Hartley of North Carolina, her sister Elizabeth Hartley of Texas, her sister Leslynn Hartley of Martinez, CA; her sister Jeanne Hartley Talbourdet of Massachusetts, and sister Sheila Hartley Downs of San Diego, CA.

Julie was proud to serve her country and will be buried with military honors at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA at 12:30 pm on February 16, 2022.
