Mary was born in Pittsburg, CA to Ageliki and KostasKoregelos; both of whom were proud Greek immigrants to the United States.  She was one of three children; her brothers Demetrios (Jim) and George preceded her in death.  She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1947, and in 1948 was hired by the City of Pittsburg as a typist.  In 1952 she was elected to the position of City Clerk, and, in 1975, added the dual responsibility of Assistant City Manager to her resume. She served in this dual role until her retirement in 1991. After retirement, Mary continued in service to her beloved Pittsburg; serving on the City Council for three years, as well as holding the role of Mayor. She was instrumental in the development of the Pittsburg Seafood Festival in 1984; she volunteered her time for 28 consecutive festivals and enjoyed every minute of it. Her experience in governance, and her ability to be fair and balanced in decision-making, led to service on several important community related boards. Tri Delta Transit, Sutter Delta, and Los Medanos College all benefited from her dedication to the community.  She has been honored by numerous members of state and local government, mentoring many of them into their own careers in public service. She was a champion for equality and fairness; in business advancement, educational access, and equal rights. She was named an honorary member of the NAACP in recognition of her heartfelt advocacy for her local Pittsburg community.

As dedicated as she was to the Pittsburg community, it paled in comparison to the love and pride she felt for her family. Mary married her husband John, an accountant in Antioch, in 1954. They were blessed to celebrate just short of 52 years together when he passed in 2006.  Together they raised three devoted children: George(Liz), Denise(Dave Monnens) and David. Mary delighted in the fact that all three of her children were loving and close, making wonderful lives with their respective spouses, and being engaged with their local communities.  Sunday night dinners were a fixture in her family, as well as spending innumerable vacations all together in Lake Tahoe, Hawaii and Hilton Head (and of COURSE getting everyone together to cheer on her beloved Golden State Warriors!).  Mary credited much of her longevity to her love of physical activity.  Over the last 25 years of her life Mary attended water aerobics 3-4 times each week, and played in a weekly bocce ball league.   Her three grandchildren were her everything; bringing a smile to her face and creating so many wonderful memories and stories. She took great pride in watching Sydney, Jake, and Alex grow up; she was front and center cheering on each one of them as they pursued their extracurriculars and education. Her legacy will live on through each of them.

Mary always put others first. She was a quietly selfless woman, wanting to elevate the people around her, and our world will be a little less bright without her.

Trisagion prayer will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at 6:00 pm at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral service Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at 11:00 am at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Concord. Burial will follow at Oak View Memorial Park 2500 E. 18th St., Antioch, CA 94509.
