Mel was born to Robert and Viola Cooper in Santa Rosa, Ca. A World War II veteran, he served in Central Europe, ending his service at Camp Stoneman in 1952. Mel went to work as a guard with US Steel before he joined the Pittsburg Police Department. He retired as Captain after 28 years. Mel's wife Mary passed in 2011. He is survived by his son Chris (Margaret), grandson Christian, sisters-in-law Sandra Gargas and Evelyn Pena and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Edward and Jess Cooper. Mel's inurnment will be held on May 3, 2012 at 12:30pm at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery 5810 Midway Rd., Dixon, Ca.
