Mel George, a long-time resident of Pittsburg, died peacefully on January 22, 2017 at John Muir-Concord, surrounded by his immediate family. He was 78 years old. Mel was born on June 7, 1938 in Oakland, California to parents Rose and Clarence George. He lived in Crockett for the first 9 years of his life, before relocating to Antioch. Mel graduated from Antioch High School in 1956. After graduating from high school, Mel worked as a mail carrier for the Antioch Postal Service for 37 years, and also served a two-year term in the Army Reserves.
On October 19, 1958, Mel married the love of his life Diane (Confetti) George and moved to Pittsburg, where they raised their two children, Lisa and Michael. In the 1970's, Mel loved coaching the Pittsburg Little League Devils girls softball team with Keith Kingsley and John Ferrante, including being able to coach his daughter Lisa for four years. Perhaps his greatest passion, other than his family was Stanford Football. Mel was a season ticket holder for over 40 years, and at one point attended over 50 consecutive Stanford-Cal games. He also attended many Stanford basketball and baseball games, was a season-ticket holder of the San Francisco Giants for over 10 years, and enjoyed watching the 49ers.
Mel is survived by his wife Diane, daughter Lisa Gilbert, son Michael (Elizabeth), three grandchildren Daniel Gilbert (Nia Gregory), Christopher Camp and Nicholas George. Mel was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Rose (Vico) George, and many aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 10th at 10:00am at Church of the Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Foundation.
