Minnie Faye Chandler's Obituary
Minnie Faye Chandler concluded this life on Friday, July 20, at her home in Antioch. She was 89. She was born on June 17, 1929, in Pampa, Texas, one of ten children born to Thomas and Enna (Chism) Payne. A 1948 graduate of Dexter High School in Dexter, New Mexico, upon graduation she moved to Antioch and soon began work in the offices of US Steel in Pittsburg. In 1950 she married Russel Nettles, who had been stationed with the US Army at Pittsburg's Camp Stoneman. They made their home in Antioch, and in 1954 Faye gave birth to their daugher Judith.
Later that year, a tragic car accident in Oklahoma ended the life of Russel, and seriously injured both Faye and Judi. Mother and daughter returned home to heal and, eventually, to begin rebuilding a new life. In 1959, Faye married Frank Chandler, a US Navy veteran who worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Frank adopted Judi, and Faye later gave birth to son David, completing the Chandler family of four.
Frank and Faye were blessed with a settled family life, Frank working for 36 years at PG&E and Faye enjoying the role of full-time homemaker, raising their children in the same house on East Madill Street where she would go on to live for 64 years. They were active, long-time members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Antioch, which in recent years relocated to Oakley and was renamed Laurel Ridge Community Church.
Faye is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judi and Steven Johnson; son and daughter-in-law, David and Edie Chandler; her brother, Kenneth Payne, and sister, Marie McWherter; four grandchildren: Steven Johnson and Isaac, Abigail, and Samuel Chandler and several nieces and nephews and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, her parents and two of her brothers and three sisters.
Memorial service Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 11:00am at Laurel Ridge Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to offer memorial gifts are invited to contribute to the Youth Camp Fund of Laurel Ridge Community Church, 2459 Laurel Road, Oakley, CA 94561.
