Dr. Orin T. Allen, Sr., 90, passed away on April 23, 2023, in West Covina, CA, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Alhambra, CA, he attended Alhambra High School, Mt. San Antonio College, and University of California, Davis, and settled in Pittsburg, CA.
Dr. Allen worked for 35 years in the Contra Costa County Probation Department as a counselor, probation officer, director, and superintendent of various facilities. Dr. Allen was a member of numerous professional and community organizations, including 21 years on the Juvenile Hall Auxiliary, Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Commission, Dow Chemical Citizens Advisory Panel, Habitat for Humanity Selection Committee, Black Culture League (founder, 14 years), East County Youth and Family Services Board of Directors, East County Boys and Girls Club (23 years), and Boy Scouts of East Delta District (12 years). For 23 years, he served as an elected member of Pittsburg Unified School District. In recognition of his public service to youth and community, he received an Outstanding Friend of Education award from the Association of California School Administrators, and an honorary doctorate degree from John F. Kennedy University.
Dr. Allen had a passion for building and flying remote control airplanes and traveling with family and friends. He was an active member of St. David's and St. Anna's Episcopal Church.
Dr. Allen is survived by his wife of 63 years, Fredrica Allen, daughter Dr. Shula Allen Bernstine (Dr. Byron), daughter Vicki Scali (Alfred), son Orin T. Allen, Jr. (Susan), brother Jaja Allen, sister Thomasina Moten, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and 6 godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas C. Allen and Celena A. Allen, and brothers Hardy, Cecil, and Duane.
A memorial funeral liturgy will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 10:00am at Church of the Good Shepherd, Pittsburg.
