Obituary

Randall ("Randy") Mark Gutierrez passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 19, 2025, at the age of 65.

Randy was born on May 21, 1959, in Pittsburg, California, to Richard and Lucie Gutierrez. The youngest of four children, he was a determined and hardworking individual from an early age, always striving to support his family. At 16, he began working at Dow Chemical, where he learned computer programming and other technical skills that would lay the foundation for his successful career in the financial services industry.

In 1977, Randy graduated from Pittsburg High School and continued pursuing his career interests when he joined Wells Fargo in San Francisco in 1983. During his 14-year tenure, he held various positions, ultimately becoming Vice President of Payment Systems. From 1997 to 2004, Randy served as CIO, CTO, and General Manager for Bankserv, where he played a pivotal role in developing electronic payment systems that enabled banks and businesses to transfer money both domestically and internationally. Later in his career, he focused on consulting and managing his own companies, Alianza Consulting and Anza International.

While Randy was passionate and accomplished in his career, he always said his greatest achievement was being a father to his children, Leslie and Ryan. He loved spending time with them and introducing them to new experiences and adventures, such as going to Giants games, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, vacationing in Mexico, and attending musicals. He also cherished time with family and friends, loved attending concerts (he was a huge Boz Scaggs fan!) and enjoyed exploring new places. He was happiest outdoors, especially by the ocean, and often spent time driving along the Pacific Coast, the Sacramento Delta, and throughout Baja California.

Randy was intellectually curious and pursued this curiosity through reading and traveling the world. He had an extensive book collection, which included his favorite authors, Hemingway and Steinbeck, and was probably one of the most well-read people you could ever meet. He believed in being well-informed and was always researching and educating himself through reading. Throughout his career, Randy traveled extensively, visiting places such as Dubai, Pakistan, Haiti, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, where he experienced diverse cultures and religions. He was outspoken about the social and environmental issues he cared about but remained accepting of people with different viewpoints and from all walks of life.

Randy also had a deep love for writing and in his later years, he channeled his life experiences into short stories and books, including one he published, "A Fairer Paradise."

Randy was a beloved father, brother, son, uncle, and friend. Though his life was much too short, the impact he made on those lucky enough to have known him is indelible. We will miss him every day.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Gutierrez, mother, Lucie (Gutierrez) Rouse, stepfather, Winslow Rouse, and brother, Joseph. He is survived by his children, Leslie and Ryan Gutierrez, sister Olivia Rodriguez and her husband, John Rodriguez, sister Tanya Gutierrez, brother Gunther Gutierrez, and many other extended family members and friends.
