Obituary

Rose Mary (Canepa) Castillo passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018, with her children by her side. She was 100 years old. Rose, or Rosie as her family fondly called her, was born in Pittsburg, CA to Ignazio (a local and Alaska fisherman) and Patrina Canepa. She was one of four children and was a lifelong resident of Pittsburg and Bay Point. She worked for several canneries in the area and was always proud of the fact that during World War II she worked at HK Porter Rubberworks and got "a man's wages." Several canneries in the area employed her before she married Gregorio Castillo in 1943 and later had five children. She dedicated her life to those five children and their descendants, and often showed her love to them through her cooking. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed gardening, eating sweets, and watching Jeopardy. She told the greatest stories, often of the great depression and her life and family history, and was witty, funny, and very sharp with a comeback right up until she passed.

Rose is survived by her children Gilbert (Laurie), Patricia, Joseph (Rena), Gregory, and daughter-in-law Betty; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her sister Grace; and many other extended family members and friends who loved and adored her. She is preceded in death by her parents Ignazio and Patrina, her husband Gregorio, her son Ignazio, and her brothers Joe and Frank. Her legacy will live on through her loved ones.
