Samuel Kamana Kala, Jr. died on November 12, 2019, after a long and brave battle with illness.  He was 56 years old.

Samuel, ever affectionately known by most only as our "Bo," was born on August 3, 1963 in San Francisco to Samuel "Sonny" Kala, Sr. and Nora (Ranjo) Kala.  The third child and oldest son in a family of seven children, Bo grew up in a home that bustled with creativity, laughter, love, and a never ending array of family and adopted family who entered their open doors for a visit of a few hours, days or years.  And even in the flurry of activity, Bo was an original beacon of open-hearted generosity matched only in size by a booming voice that filled a room with his laughter and stories.

Raised in a Catholic home, Bo attended St. Joseph's Elementary, Cathedral Intermediate, and Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco.  Apprenticed to his uncle – one of his many guiding lights – Ernest Ranjo, he became a master printer, proficient in both letterpress and offset printing techniques.  He retired in 2018 from ErnaPress, the printing company he inherited from his uncle, but remained a fervent student of this artisan craft.

At his essence, Bo was passion and heart.  With all he cherished, his commitment was both resolute and unconditional.   For many, Bo was the family ambassador and the 'first phone call' one would make in time of need or if there was news to be shared, both good and bad.  He could be counted on to be your welcome committee, happy champion, or to sacrifice all to come to the aid of those in his orbit.  Bo was unfailingly protective and unreptentantly outspoken, and always with a sense of duty to what he valued most: family.  They were the light of his life and he let all know it until the very end.

Like his father before him, Bo was a lifelong learner with a relentless pursuit of his many and eclectic interests – sports, creative arts, music, technology – and he was compelled to share them with all.  He was the "Uncle Bo" who taught many to assemble and ride a bike, who deconstructed the front line formation, explained the conversion from pica to inches, and helped you foster an afinity for both analog and digital sound and the ability to weigh their pros and cons. These gifts he modestly shared seemingly unaware of their potential to enthrall and eternally endear him to those blessed to have received them.

Bo is survived by his mother, Nora Kala; his siblings Winona Montanio, Flordeliza Kala, Steven Kala, Sr., Luana Kala Acosta, Felicia Kala, and Bernadette Kala Abrego; twenty nieces and nephews; twenty-two great nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins near and far whom he loved dearly.

In keeping with his modest beginnings, a small gathering of family will celebrate his life in a day of remembrance, and his remains will eventually be reunited with his father in Hana, Maui, for his final resting.  All those who wish to honor Bo's life are encouraged to embrace moments to step from the sidelines and live as fully and as fiercely as he did during his far too short time in this world.
