Sergio "Dino"
Tumbaga
Oct 7, 1938 — Jan 16, 2023
Pittsburg
Sergio "Dino" Santillan Tumbaga passed away on January 16, 2023, surrounded by family at his home in Pittsburg, California. He was 84 years old.
Sergio was born on October 7, 1938, to Felisa and Edward Tumbaga in Zamboanga, Philippines. He was the eldest of 9 children. While his father served in the U.S. Army, Sergio (then a teenager) and his family moved to the United States in the early 1950s and established their home in the Parkside neighborhood of Pittsburg, California. Sergio graduated from Pittsburg High School.
Sergio is survived by his children Evelyn Peterson (Leon), Dayang Maya Tumbaga, James Ramsey (Megan), Robert Tumbaga, and Breanne Tumbaga; grandchildren Tamilyn White, Jaylynn Ramsey, Mason Ramsey, Jaxson Ramsey, and Madden Ramsey; great-grandchildren Jackson and Delilah; siblings Teresita DeTorres, Adriana Villalpando, Frances Passot (Bill), and Edgar Tumbaga; sister-in-law Rosemary Tumbaga and brother-in-law Marvin Pierce; and many nieces and nephews.
Sergio is preceded in death by his parents Felisa and Edward, baby sister Bonifacia Tumbaga, brother Roger Tumbaga, sister Pilar Tumbaga, and sister Virginia Pierce.
As a young adult seeking to provide for his family, Sergio worked as a farmworker in the farmlands of California's Central Valley, and was involved with the United Farm Workers movement. He worked the majority of his life as a clerk, cashier, and butcher at retail grocery stores, including L&S in West Pittsburg and Lee's Market in Brentwood. He also worked as a security guard for various events.
Sergio spent his free time enjoying his many hobbies including photography, fishing, martial arts (black belt and sensei), whittling, traveling, and watching sports (avid fan of Bay Area teams - 49ers, Giants, Warriors, and Sharks). Sergio loved socializing with people and enjoyed gathering with family and friends. He had a knack for striking up a conversation with a complete stranger and instantly making a new friend.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 26 from 2:00-6:00 p.m., with a blessing and memorial service starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel.
