Dr. Sherwin J. Black (Doc). passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at John Muir Medical Center due to complications related to a medical procedure.  He was 85 years old. Sherwin Black was born in Montpelier, Idaho.  He was preceded in death by his parents, June A Black and Thora E Black and by his brothers, Karl Black and Kent Black. He is survived by his sister Myrna Olorenshaw of Murray, Utah and his son, Steven Black of Rocklin, CA and four grandchildren, Ryan, Meghan, Ashton, Stephen and his partner Gail.

Sherwin grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah whereas a boy, he delivered newspapers for the Salt Lake Tribune for 5 years, often with his dog, Tiny, following close behind.  He attended South High School in Salt Lake City. He also worked downtown at Centre Theater until enlisting in the US Army in 1955. He was stationed at the Fort Ord Army Post near Monterey California. There, he entered the Army Dental Corps and also served as a prison guard at the Lompoc Military Prison. When free time presented itself, he learned to fly at a local airport and later earned his Pilot License. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah. Upon graduation, he was married in the Salt Lake City Temple to Yvonne Bates and moved to San Francisco to attend College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1961. He graduated in June of 1965 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and welcomed his new son, Steven Black. He started his dental practice and remained in business for 52 years.  He resided in Walnut Creek for most of his years.  Dr. Black was a voracious reader from a young age throughout his life.  His intellect was unmatched, his humor and wit well known.

Dr. Black loved his family, his flying, his dentistry and his patients. He was a dedicated father and had a long and close relationship with his son.  He loved Lake Tahoe and the times spent there with family.  He had a home in Carnelian Bay for over 20 years and frequented the area most of his life.

He was happy and comfortable in his last days, working in the back yard attending to his tomatoes, grapefruit and orange trees, his artichokes and most of all his rhubarb plants.  He enjoyed spending time in the kitchen and his cooking was a lifelong endeavor and he was constantly trying new methods and new recipes.

He leaves many friends and family with the knowledge that nothing had been left unsaid and that he had fulfilled his expectations as a father, provider and partner.  His family will forever miss the man whom they've known over their lives, and they appreciate all the condolences (many) received from family and friends.

Dr Sherwin J Black DDS, graveside service will be held on June 16, 2022, at 10:45am at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, CA.
