Theresa "Terry"
Matejcek
Jan 27, 1933 — Sep 6, 2022
Pittsburg
Theresa "Terry," "Toots," (Rotell) Matejcek, was born on January 27, 1933, to Ann & James Rotell in Weirton, West Virginia. Theresa passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the age of 89.
A force unto herself, Theresa arrived in Pittsburg, California, in 1948. From the moment she arrived, Theresa embraced the city as her own. She loved her community fiercely and worked hard toward expanding its opportunities for her family and friends to grow.
She invested herself in multiple organizations throughout her life that made up the town, such as Catholic Daughters of America, the first female officer of the Italian America Club of Pittsburg, Soroptimist International of Pittsburg, the Pittsburg Elks Lodge, the Good Shepherd Women's Guild, Delta Quilters, founder of St. Peter Martyr School's Annual Grandparent's Boutique, and so much more.
Theresa was devoted to ensuring that every child had the opportunity of receiving an education. Her lifetime dream of educating children led her to be elected and serve on Pittsburg's School Board for four years.
And through all her dreams, one of Theresa's most well-known passions in life was quilting. Her pieces spoke for themselves and told stories through the colors, stitches, and patterns she created.
From quilting retreats to holding classes at the Pittsburg Senior Center, teaching quilting and machine embroidery at Pittsburg Adult Education two days a week, and teaching countless classes in quilt shops all over the area, Theresa was dedicated to her passions and adamant about sharing them with others in hopes of helping them find their own.
Although her activities kept her busy, Theresa's greatest gift in life was her family. Specifically, she thrived off of being a grandmother. While she was their biggest advocate, they were her pride & joy. From making Halloween costumes to founding and funding scholarship programs & school fundraisers, Theresa's greatest joy was giving her children and grandchildren the ability to live a life that fulfilled their dreams.
Theresa is preceded in her death by her parents, husband Raymond Matejcek and son James, "Jim" Matejcek, and sisters-in-law Beverly Rotell and Virginia Rotell.
She is survived by her two brothers, Patrick Rotell & Vincent Rotell; children, Patrick (Joan) Matejcek and Michele (Ed) Loretto. Theresa will also be missed by her grandchildren Matthew (Susan), Scott (Amber), Paul, Sarah, Gabriela, and Vincent; her great-grandchildren Aubrey, Jaxon, and Julian; nieces and nephews Lisa, Kelley (David), Tacy (John), Jeffery (Theo), Brian (Emily), Shane, Sarah; great-nephew and great-niece Eli and Evelyn, and many other family members.
A celebration of life for Theresa will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 11:00 am at Good Shephard Church, Pittsburg, CA. In lieu of flowers, Theresa's family requests donations be made to: St. Peter Martyr School 425 W 4th Street, Pittsburg 94565 for the Theresa Matejcek Scholarship Fund.
