Victor Mercado Becerra passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023, at the age of 94 joining his late beloved wife Consuelo in eternal peace. He was born in Yahualica, Jalisco, Mexico to Otilio and Herculana Becerra. Victor came to California on November 13, 1947. He worked at West End Chemical Co. in Trona, CA. for two years. He moved to Pittsburg on June 24, 1949, and worked for Santa Fe Railroad and the Hickmott Co. He settled in Pittsburg and became a permanent lifelong resident of Pittsburg. On June 19, 1955, Victor married his love of his life Consuelo Quesada and raised three children: Sylvia, Victor and Sonia. He worked as a Machine Operator for Interpace Corp. for 20 years. Victor's love and devotion for his Catholic faith, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe was divinely engraved in his heart. He was deeply devoted to St. Peter Martyr Church. He was elected to the Parish council and was a delegate to the Oakland Diocese. In 1969 Victor successfully advocated for St. Peter Martyr Church to assign an additional priest of Mexican decent to officiate Mass in Spanish for the growing Spanish-speaking community. He was a dedicated parish member for 74 years and served as an usher for St. Peter Martyr Church. He served as President of the Sociedad Guadalupana and President of the Funeraria Mexicana, Inc.
Throughout his whole life he was very instrumental with actively volunteering at St. Peter Martyr Church and the Sociedad Guadalupana doing multiple fundraising projects to benefit the community. To name a few he helped raise funds to repair the roof and fixtures of the nun's convent at St. Peter Martyr Church. He organized fundraisers by having fiestas at the City Park to help the Sociedad Guadalupana Club. He volunteered for an emergency aid fundraiser to help a flooded village of 27 displaced families in Mexico. He visited the sick, elderly and helped the needy in the community whenever possible. He petitioned to bring El Señor del Encino from Yahualica, Mexico to be displayed at St. Peter Martyr Church which was touring other churches in the United States. In 1985, he helped with the earthquake recovery gathering funds to send to Mexico City, and again in 1995 for the earthquake in Colima and Jalisco, Mexico.
Victor enjoyed being with family and friends, volunteering immensely to church events and fundraisers, going to family fiestas and mariachis, watching sports, gardening, doing upholstery and always busy working on any creative project.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife Consuelo. He is survived by his devoted children: Sylvia (Marcellino) Abundis, Victor Jr., (LeAnn), and Sonia (D'Leon) Dolojan. Grandchildren: Victor III, Justin, Steven, Micaela, Olivia, Keiana, and Dailon. Great-grandchildren: Steven Jr., Makena, Maverick, Justin Jr., Logan and Jalynn. He is survived by his sisters: Julia, Antonia, Gerania and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Heliodoro, Elias, and Dionicio. Predeceased sisters: Josefina, Irene, Carmen, Emilia, and Maria. We are comforted knowing his spirit is at rest in heaven with his loving wife Consuelo and all his predeceased family and friends. He lived his life to the fullest and will be remembered for his sincere love, dedication, generosity and hardworking ethic. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered.
Visitation and rosary will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 10:00 to 11:30am at the Pittsburg Funeral Chapel. Funeral liturgy following and begin at 12:00pm at St. Peter Martyr Church 740 Black Diamond St, Pittsburg, CA 94565. Committal services following at Holy Cross Cemetery in Antioch.
