William Wayne Smart of Pittsburg, CA passed away peacefully on May 19th, 2023 surrounded by his family at the tender age of 84.

Bill was born on October 5th, 1938, to his parents Andrew and Madeline Smart in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of 13 children. Bill married Tatsue Nakayama in July 1960.

Bill was preceded in death by his Wife Tatsue and parents Andrew and Madeline and his 12 siblings. Bill is survived by his four children Aggie Fernandez (Anthony), Anna Moore (Don), William Wayne Smart II (Debbie), and Andrew Smart (Patty). He was a grandfather of 9 grandchildren: Mitch and Rachel Fernandez, Aaron, Paige and Tommy Moore, William Wayne Smart III, Kimberly Smart and Patrina and Drew Smart. Bill also had 9 great grandchildren: Charlyze, Alex, Mateo, Jaxon, Scarlett, Alivia, Waylon, Hunter and Dexter.

At the young age of 17 he entered the United States Navy and spent 20 years serving our country as a diver and Explosive Ordinance Disposal Officer. In the Navy he did many tours on ships including USS Prairie, USS St. Paul, USS Diamond Head and USS Everglades. Bill became a Purple Heart recipient during his service in the Vietnam War. One of the highlights of his career was when he was assigned to retrieve 4 hydrogen bombs that landed throughout Spain and in the Mediterranean Sea during the Cold War His efforts are recorded in the Nuclear Science Museum in New Mexico. After 20 years of service Bill retired as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW-02). In his next career Bill chose to be a firefighter where he achieved the rank of Fire Chief. He served as a firefighter throughout California, Alaska and Japan. He retired after 20 years of Civil Service in Okinawa Japan.

Some of his hobbies included woodworking, leathermaking, gambling, playing guitar and the banjo, fishing and spending time with his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at Lone Tree Golf Course, Friday June 16th, 2023 at 12 PM, 4800 Golf Course Road, Antioch CA 94509
